Prescription Drug:
Norfloxacin belongs to a group of broad spectrum antibiotics called the quinolones. It works by entering the bacterial cell and inhibiting a chemical called DNA-gyrase which is involved in the production of genetic material (DNA). This therefore prevents the bacteria from reproducing and their growth is stopped.
Norfloxacin reaches high levels in the urine and so is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
Norfloxacin is used for the treatment of infections of the urinary system.
Even if your condition improves it is important to complete the prescribed course of norfloxacin.
The most common side effects are feeling sick, diarrhoea, dizziness and headache.
Norfloxacin is used to treat bacterial infections of the urinary system. It works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.
Drug without Prescription:
Norfloxacin is an antibacterial medication used to treat infections of the urinary tract, including cystitis (inflammation of the inner lining of the bladder caused by a bacterial infection), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), and certain sexually transmitted diseases, such as gonorrhea.
Norfloxacin is not given for the treatment of syphilis. When used in high doses for a short period of time to treat gonorrhea, it may actually mask or delay the symptoms of syphilis. Your doctor may perform certain tests for syphilis at the time of diagnosing gonorrhea, and after treatment with Norfloxacin.
No Prescription:
Norfloxacin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Norfloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
Prescription is used for:
Infection of the bladder or tubes that pass urine (urinary tract infection)
Take Norfloxacin by mouth, usually twice a day, at least 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after a meal or dairy products (e.g., milk, yogurt). Take with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters). Drink plenty of fluids while taking Norfloxacin unless your doctor tells you otherwise. The dosage is based on your medical condition. Take Norfloxacin 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking any products containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium. Some examples include quinapril, certain forms of didanosine (chewable/dispersible buffered tablets or pediatric oral solution), vitamins/minerals, and antacids. Calcium-enriched juices, sucralfate, bismuth subsalicylate, iron, and zinc are also included. These products bind with norfloxacin preventing its full absorption. Antibiotics work best when the amount of drug in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. Continue to take Norfloxacin until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Do not share Norfloxacin with others. Norfloxacin has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection unless told to do so by your doctor. A different medication may be necessary in those cases. Laboratory and/or medical tests (e.g., kidney function test, blood counts, cultures) may be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects. Consult your doctor for more details.
