Chloramphenicol |

Generic Name: Chloramphenicol
|
Prescription Drug:
Chloramphenicol is a powerful antibiotic with the ability to kill a wide variety of bacteria. It interferes with the production of proteins that the bacteria need to multiply and divide. This inhibits the ability of the bacteria to grow (bacteriostatic) and therefore stops the spread of the infection.
Chloramphenicol has the potential to cause serious side effects when given by mouth or injection, therefore its use is reserved for life threatening infections.
This belongs to the group of drugs known as anti-infective ear preparations.
It is used to treat bacterial infections of the ear by killing the bacteria responsible.

Chloramphenicol is best taken on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. It may be taken with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. The liquid suspension form of this drug must be shaken well before using. Store in the refrigerator. Check the expiration date and discard any unused portion after 14 days because the drug loses potency. Antibiotics work best when the amount of drug in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by taking the medication at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Continue to take Chloramphenicol until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection.
