Betadine works by lubricating and moistening the surface of the eyeball in the same way as natural tears.
In the presence of blood, serum, purulent exudate and necrotic (dead) tissue, its action persists while the colour remains.
These chemicals exert their antiseptic effect by slowly releasing iodine. Antiseptics (sometimes called germicides) are chemicals that kill or prevent the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and bacterial spores.
Betadine is indicated for:

Contraindications
Betadine is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- Allergy to iodine;
- Children under 2 years of age;
- Decreased kidney function;
- If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- If you have other eye drops to use, instil those into the eyes first and leave a gap of at least 5 minutes before using Betadine eye drops;
- If your vision is blurred, do not drive a car or operate machinery;
- Regular use should be avoided when taking lithium;
- Regular use when taking lithium;
- This medicine should not be indicated regularly by pregnant or breast-feeding women;
- Throw the container away immediately after use, even if it is not empty;
- Thyroid disorders such as nodular colloidal goitre, endemic goitre or Hashimoto's thyroiditis (do not use regularly in these conditions);
