Rimactane is a rifamycin antibiotic prescribed to prevent and treat tuberculosis and other infections.
Infrequently, serious (sometimes fatal) liver disease has occurred with the use of these two drugs alone. Several other effective alternative treatments can be used to treat latent tuberculosis (isoniazid for 9 months).
Rimactane is prescribed to prevent and treat tuberculosis or other infections.
Rimactane treats only bacterial infections.
Rimactane will not work for viral infections (common cold, flu).
Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
Use of only Rimactane and pyrazinamide as a two-drug, two-month therapy to treat tuberculosis (specifically "latent" TB infection) is no longer recommended.
Use of Rimactane and pyrazinamide as part of a multi-drug (3 or more drugs) treatment plan for tuberculosis is still acceptable.
