Contraindications
Nitrofurantoin is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:

- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency;

- Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially antacids, antibiotics, benztropine (Cogentin), diphenhydramine (Benadryl), probenecid (Benemid), trihexyphenidyl (Artane), and vitamins.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking nitrofurantoin, call your doctor. Nitrofurantoin should not be taken by women in the last month of pregnancy.
- Tell your doctor if you have anemia, kidney disease, lung disease, nerve damage, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency (an inherited blood disease).
- You should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
Interactions
Do not take Nitrofurantoin with any of the following drugs:
- Sulfinpyrazone;
- Quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, lomefloxacin, norfloxacin and ofloxacin;
- Probenecid;
- Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate;
Side Effects
Nitrofurantoin side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- Yellowing of eyes or skin;
- Vomiting;
- Upset stomach;
- Unusually weak or tired;
- Unusual bleeding or bruising;
- Tingling, burning, pain, or numbness in hands or feet;

- Swelling of the lips or tongue;
- Skin rash;
- Redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth;
- Persistent cough;
- Pale or blue-tinted skin;
- Numbness tingling or pinprick sensation in the fingers and toes;

- Joint aches or pains;
- Headache;
- Fever or infection;
- Fever or chills;
- Excessive tiredness;
- Dizziness, drowsiness;
- Difficulty breathing;
- Diarrhea;
